Health & Energy

Your health and energy affect far more than how your body feels.

They influence your mood, patience, motivation, confidence, focus, relationships, and your ability to imagine what comes next.

When this area of your life feels low, everything else can feel harder.

You may still be functioning.
You may still be working, caring, organising, and doing what needs to be done.

But underneath it, you may feel tired, flat, tense, depleted, or disconnected from your own body.

In the Wheel of Life Assessment, the Health & Energy area helps you pause and ask:

Is my body supporting the life I am trying to live, or am I pushing through on energy I no longer have?

This is not about perfection.

It is not about diets, discipline, or forcing yourself into another routine.

It is about noticing whether your current level of health, rest, stress, and energy is helping you move forward — or quietly keeping you stuck.

Why Health and Energy Matter in Midlife

In midlife, your energy becomes harder to ignore.

What you used to push through may now feel heavier. What you once recovered from quickly may now take longer. Stress, responsibility, emotional load, hormonal changes, sleep, grief, work pressure, caring roles, and years of putting yourself last can all begin to show up in the body.

This does not mean something is wrong with you.

It may mean your body is no longer willing to be left out of the conversation.

Health and energy matter because they affect your capacity to make decisions, hold boundaries, feel clear, enjoy your life, and take meaningful steps forward.

A low score in this area is not a failure.

It is information.

What This Area Includes

Health & Energy may inclued:

  • sleep and rest
  • stress levels
  • physical health
  • movement
  • food and hydration
  • emotional exhaustion
  • hormonal changes
  • mental load
  • nervous-system pressure
  • how often you feel drained or restored

This area is not only about whether you are “healthy” in an obvious way.

It is also about whether you have enough energy for the life you are living.

What Low Health and Energy Can Look Like

This area may need attention if you notice yourself:

  • waking up tired
  • feeling drained before the day begins
  • struggling to concentrate
  • feeling emotionally flat or irritable
  • pushing through instead of pausing
  • relying on caffeine, sugar, alcohol, or distraction to keep going
  • ignoring body signals until they become hard to ignore
  • feeling too tired to think about change
  • cancelling things you used to enjoy
  • saying “I just need to get through this” too often

Sometimes the clearest sign is not illness.

It is the quiet realisation that you are getting through life, but not feeling fully alive in it.

What May Be Underneath

When health and energy are low, it is easy to blame yourself.

You may think you need more discipline, better habits, or stronger motivation.

But often, low energy is not a character flaw.

But low energy is not always a motivation problem.

It may be connected to what has been shaping your life for a long time.

You may have been living in responsibility mode.
You may have learned to put your needs last.
You may have been carrying emotional stress without naming it.
You may have been running on pressure, survival, or overgiving.
You may have been ignoring tiredness because there was always something else to do.

This is where health and energy connect back to self-awareness.

Your body may be showing you where your current life is asking too much from you, or where old patterns are still running the show.

What If Nothing Changes?

This is the part worth being honest about.

If nothing changes in this area, what is the most likely outcome?

Not the worst-case scenario. Not a dramatic story. Just the likely path if the same pattern keeps repeating.

You may keep waking up tired.
You may keep putting yourself last.
You may keep needing more effort to do ordinary things.
You may keep feeling too drained to make decisions.
You may keep postponing the life you say you want because you do not have the energy to begin.

Over time, low energy can start to shape your identity.

You may stop seeing yourself as someone who has choices.

You may begin to believe that this is just how life is now.

That is why this area matters.

Not because you need to overhaul everything, but because your future self may need you to notice what your body has been trying to say.

If nothing changes, nothing changes.

What If You Give This Area Attention?

Giving this area attention does not mean changing everything at once.

It may mean listening sooner.

It may mean resting without guilt.

It may mean booking the appointment.

It may mean saying no to one thing that drains you.

It may mean choosing food, movement, quiet, or sleep in a way that supports you rather than punishes you.

When health and energy begin to feel more supported, other parts of life can also become clearer.

You may have more patience.
You may make decisions with less fog.
You may feel more connected to yourself.
You may notice what drains you and what restores you.
You may have more capacity to take the next step.

Energy is not just physical.

It is part of your ability to create a life that feels true.

Gratitude: What Is Already Supporting You?

Gratitude is not about pretending everything is fine.

It is about noticing what is already supporting you, so you are not only focused on what is missing.

In this area, gratitude might sound like:

  • I am thankful my body has kept going.
  • I am thankful I am starting to listen.
  • I am thankful I can notice what drains me.
  • I am thankful for one small thing that still gives me energy.
  • I am thankful that change can begin gently.

Gratitude does not mean ignoring what needs attention.

It helps you begin from appreciation instead of complaint.

From there, you can ask:

What do I appreciate here?
What needs my attention?
What am I willing to do differently?

Gratitude opens the door.
Honesty shows what needs attention.
Action changes the pattern.

How to Begin Gently

Do not start by trying to fix your whole life.

Start by choosing one small supportive step for the next seven days.

That might be:

  • going to bed 20 minutes earlier
  • booking a health check
  • drinking more water before coffee
  • taking a short walk
  • saying no to one unnecessary commitment
  • making one meal easier
  • creating ten minutes of quiet before the day begins
  • noticing when you are pushing through instead of listening

The step does not need to be impressive.

It only needs to show your body that you are listening.

Reflection Exercise

Take a few minutes to write honestly about this area of your life.

1. What is this area showing me right now?

Notice what feels tired, tense, depleted, supported, ignored, or in need of attention.

2. What can I appreciate in this area, even if it is not perfect?

This could be something simple: your body has kept going, you are noticing earlier, or you have one small source of energy still available to you.

3. If nothing changes, what is the likely outcome?

Ask yourself:

  • What would likely stay the same?
  • What would become harder?
  • What would I keep tolerating?
  • What would it cost me emotionally, physically, relationally, or practically?
  • What would my future self wish I had noticed sooner?

4. What could become possible if I gave this area more attention?

Ask yourself:

  • What might become easier?
  • What might I feel more in control of?
  • What would help me feel more connected to my body and energy?
  • What could shift if I stopped pushing through and started listening?

5. What is one small action I can take this week?

Choose one step.

Not ten.

One.

The aim is not to overhaul your health and energy overnight. The aim is to begin changing the pattern.

Emotion Vocabulary Wheel

Sometimes low energy is not only physical.

It can also be connected to emotions you have not yet named.

An emotion vocabulary wheel can help you move beyond broad words like “tired,” “flat,” “fine,” or “stressed” and begin to identify what may actually be sitting underneath.

You may notice words such as:

  • overwhelmed
  • resentful
  • disappointed
  • anxious
  • unsupported
  • disconnected
  • pressured
  • depleted

Naming the emotion does not fix everything.

But it can help you understand what your body and energy may be trying to show you.

You may find it helpful to use an emotion vocabulary wheel as you work through this reflection.
